Huck Finn is influenced by Tom Sawyer positively because he was a friend and he had fun with him. I can tell that he is influenced positively by him because he is always saying “What would Tom Sawyer do?” and “I wish Tom Sawyer was here” (Page 50 Paragraph 4).
Huck is influenced positively by Widow Douglas as well. She is the person who was trying to teach him and tell him about religion, although Huck did not like her very much, she had a positive impact on him. She tries to teach him religion and encourages him to pray. “She told me to pray every day, and whatever I asked for I would get it” (Page 8 Paragraph 1)
Pap is the person that has the most negative impact on Huck. He is most constantly drunk and he disappeared for one year while Huck had no idea where he was. Pap is simply a racist drunk. He took pap out in the woods into a cabin and locked him in while he went out to get something, and this is in no way a positive influence. He gets drunk and storms about saying things like ”Oh, yes, this is a wonderful government, wonderful. Why, looky here. There was a free nigger there, from Ohio; a mulatter, most as white as a white man” (Page 20 Chapter 2)
Jim is the most positive in the part we are in now in the book. He helps Huck along and gives him motivation and a lot of helpful advice. They use each other to support themselves. The quote “Come in, Huck, but doan’ look at his face – it’s too gashly” (Page 18 Paragraph 3) shows that he looks out for Huck and doesn’t want him to be scarred from seeing such a gruesome scene.
